Ontask Middle East Customs Clearance: Port Storage & Early Container Pickup During UAE Customs Inspection

31 Mar, 2026

For Ontask Middle East double-clearance shipments, a common concern among clients is: if goods are selected for random inspection by UAE Customs, will the goods be kept at the port, or can containers be picked up in advance? The answer is clear: containers cannot be picked up or removed ahead of schedule, and the goods must remain in the port’s customs-controlled area throughout the inspection process.

UAE Customs strictly enforces the principle of "customs clearance first, container pickup later" to ensure the standardization and rigor of the customs clearance process. Once goods arrive at the terminal and are unloaded into the yard, they immediately enter the customs supervision scope. After the initial screening through AI risk control systems and X-ray scanning, any shipment marked for further inspection will be transferred to a dedicated inspection zone within the port, where it will be under strict customs supervision at all times.

During the inspection period, containers are prohibited from leaving the supervised area. Terminals and yards will not handle any container pickup requests without official customs release documents. Goods can only be moved within the supervised zone (such as transfer to the inspection area) and must not be removed from the port under any circumstances.

Only after UAE Customs completes the full inspection, verifies that the goods comply with local regulations, and issues an official release notice can the consignee or its authorized agent proceed to collect the container and transport it away. If laboratory testing is required for the goods (e.g., for safety, quality, or compliance verification), the goods must remain in the port’s supervised area until the test results are approved and the final customs clearance is completed.

To summarize: During UAE Customs random inspection, goods must be stored in the port’s customs-controlled area, and early container pickup is not permitted. The issuance of the official customs release document is the sole prerequisite for container collection.
