Saudi DDP, Hidden Charges Easily Overlooked When Exporting Goods to the Middle East

DDP (door-to-door delivery with customs clearance and tax included) via Middle East overseas warehouses has become the mainstream logistics model for cross-border exports. Most sellers only focus on basic freight costs and tend to overlook various hidden surcharges, which can lead to excessive logistics expenses. The following are common recurring hidden charges that create major cost loopholes for shipments via dedicated Middle East freight lines.

First, granular warehouse handling surcharges. Most quotations only state basic handling fees without specifying separate charges for labelling, inspection, product photography, secondary sorting and other itemised services. Such fees are commonly charged separately by Middle East overseas warehouses. Small repeated charges such as per-unit labelling and product quality inspection can add up to substantial costs — this is the most common pitfall for small and medium-sized sellers. Additional labour and material costs also apply to reinforcing non-standard packaging, using custom packaging materials, and palletising non-palletised goods.

Second, overstay storage and detention fees. Freight forwarders usually only specify the free storage period without clearly stating the charging rules for overdue storage. When goods are held up due to port congestion, customs clearance delays, vessel schedule disruptions and other issues, daily overstay storage and detention charges accrue rapidly and can far exceed standard warehousing costs. Some warehouses also enforce a minimum billing volume rule, meaning even small consignments are charged based on the minimum volumetric threshold.

Third, hidden customs and port charges. DDP quotations do not always cover destination terminal handling charges (THC), port security fees, documentation amendment fees and other port surcharges. Customs inspections in the Middle East are stringent. Unless the logistics channel explicitly covers inspection costs, all on-site labour and venue fees arising from customs checks are charged on a pass-through basis. In addition, volumetric weight charges for light bulky cargo, as well as overweight and oversize surcharges, are other frequently overlooked hidden costs.
