For shipments via Saudi dedicated logistics lines, non-compliant solid wood packaging may easily lead to customs detention, return, destruction and hefty port demurrage charges. This is a frequent clearance bottleneck for Middle East shipments, so it is critical to strictly comply with the ISPM15 international phytosanitary standard and local Saudi quarantine regulations.
First of all, solid wood packaging (including wooden pallets, wooden crates, wooden frames, dunnage, etc.) must undergo approved phytosanitary treatment, either heat treatment (HT) or compliant methyl bromide fumigation (MB). A clear and intact official IPPC mark must be applied. The mark shall include the country code, treatment facility number and treatment type code to ensure traceability and wear resistance. In addition, bark, wood shavings, soil and pest eggs must be fully removed to eliminate risks of pest infestation. Engineered wood panels such as plywood and fibreboard are not classified as solid wood packaging and are exempt from IPPC treatment, making them the preferred option to reduce inspection risks.

Secondly, sufficient reinforcement and protection of packaging are required. Saudi Arabia has a hot and arid climate, and cargo by sea is also exposed to temperature variations that cause condensation. Wooden crates should be reinforced with strapping and properly treated for moisture and water resistance to prevent breakage and dampness, which would otherwise damage goods in transit and trigger inspection anomalies. Valid phytosanitary certificates must be retained for declaration under Saudi Arabia's SABER clearance system, ensuring consistency between documentation information and physical packaging.
Finally, verify the integrity of IPPC marks before shipment. Avoid blurred, altered or counterfeit IPPC stamps. Confirm clearance specifics with your dedicated freight forwarder in advance and set aside a buffer period for possible inspections. Compliance is essential for smooth customs clearance, reliable transit times and controlled logistics costs on Saudi shipping lines. Mitigate phytosanitary risks related to wooden packaging at the source to ensure hassle-free delivery of your cargo.
